Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has been in operation in the country since 1936; initially as Ceylon Central Council Branch of British Red Cross Society and then as Ceylon Red Cross Society from 1949. In 1952, the International Committee of the Red Cross recognised the organisation to be admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
