Safeway Jordan was founded in 1987 as a pioneer in retailing services. In 1991, Al-Masri family purchased the company. The success of the flagship store in Shmesani led to a rapid expansion throughout the country. In December 2003, Safeway Jordan operations were acquired by The Sultan Center (TSC) of Kuwait. Established in 1976 as a provider of hardware, tools, and supplies to the oil industry, TSC has expanded to become the premier retailer and leading supplier of supermarket items, perishables, and general merchandise in the Middle East. Today, Safeway operates a total of eleven service stores, two wholesale centers, and three Safeway Express convenience stores in Jordan.
