IITH 5G Success Story: India made its maiden entry into global wireless standards in 5G with its academia leading the way. The IITH team along with other academic and Indian Industry members made substantial contributions to the development of 5G with more than 400 technical papers submitted to the 3GPP work groups over a 5-year time span (2017-21). During this time, several patents have developed and some of which are declared as 5G standards-essential patents (SEPs). A new waveform technology called pi/2 BPSK with spectrum shaping that enables the development of large rural cells has been introduced in that is now an integral part of 5G standards. Funding from DoT and MeitY enabled IITH to develop prototypes of a 5G base station, user equipment (UE), and NB-IoT System-on-Chip (SoC).
