Mexico (UNAM) The Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (National Autonomous University of Mexico), a public research institution that focuses both on teaching and research, is ranked number one in Mexico and also ranks highly in the world. It is the largest university in Latin America and has one of the largest campuses in the world with over 360,000 students and with a presence in Mexicos 32 states. It also has presence in 9 countries, has 34 research institutes, 26 museums, and 18 historic sites. Culture is both important and prevalent throughout UNAM witnessed by the murals across the main campus that were painted by some of the most recognized artists in Mexican history, such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. UNAM was founded on September 22, 1910, and obtained its autonomy from the government in 1929.
