In 2006, several community partners joined the Healthy Community Council to conduct a needs assessment. The results of the Healthy Community Council Report showed that significant challenges in accessing health care in the area existed. In 2007, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration designated Harrisonburg, Virginia as having a Medically Underserved Population. From that designation an action committee formed and successfully created the Harrisonburg Community Health Center, Inc.
