The idea of ballooning was first thought of by Jules Verne in his novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon in 1862. 100 years later, writer and Hot Air Balloonist Anthony Smith successfully flew a Hot Air Balloon from Zanzibar to the Tanzanian mainland, and later, over the Serengeti and The Great Rift Valley. He was accompanied by the now renowned photographer and wildlife movie maker, Sir Alan Root. In Alans mind, a seed was planted and he set about getting a Hot Air Balloon and learning to fly it, resulting in the film Safari by Balloon, now seen by over 98 million people in 28 countries. Yet another seed was planted, why not let people visiting The Maasai Mara enjoy fantastic sights from a Hot Air Balloon. January 3rd 1976 the inaugural flight took off from Keekorok Lodge in the Maasai Mara. Thousands of passengers have since enjoyed the sights and sounds of the wild!!
