Decarbonizing the built environment. ~ In December 2020, the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy released the long-awaited Regulations for the Mandatory Display & Submission of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for large commercial buildings. Qualifying buildings have until December 2022 to obtain their EPCs! This milestone is a significant driver for energy efficiency and long-term reduction in carbon emissions in South Africa. South Africa has an internationally committed target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. EPCs is a statement (valid for five years) of the energy performance of a building over the range of Very Energy Efficient to Not Energy Efficient when assessed against a reference point, and in accordance with SANS 1544:2014.
