The Past Revillagigedo Island is the ancestral territory of the Taanta kwaan Tlingit and Saanya kwaan Tlingit. The Seventeenth Century saw the arrival of the Haida who migrated from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. In 1887, the Tsimshian canoed from British Columbia to Annette Island with Father William Duncan. During World War II, many Aleut people were relocated to a federal Civilian Conservation Corps work camp at Ward Lake. This brief historical background is the foundation of Ketchikan Indian Community [KIC]. KICs tribal citizens are descendants of Tlingit, Haida & Tsimshian as well as Aleut and many other tribal nations. The political activism of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood was the impetus for the formation of KIC as well as many other Native advocacy organizations. KIC was incorporated in 1940 under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 which was amended for Alaska in 1936. KIC, a federally recognized Indian Tribe, serves 6000+ tribal citizens and is the second largest tribe in the State of Alaska. The Present In an exercise of tribal sovereignty, the KIC Tribal Council opted to negotiate Self Governance Compacts for programs and services through the Bureau of Indian Affairs [BIA] and Indian Health Service [IHS] in 1997. KICs IHS Compact empowered the tribe to assume responsibility for the KIC Tribal Health Clinic [KICTHC] which provides services to KIC and Saxman tribal citizens. The KICTHC maintains accreditation for the services it provides through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). KICs BIA Compact supports the tribe in providing Education & Training, Social Services, Housing and Cultural Resources programs

Advanced Physical Therapy is the largest employee-owned Physical Therapy practice in the state of Alaska, with 6 clinical sites located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Wasilla, Soldotna and Seward. Valerie A. Phelps, PT, ScD, COMT, FAOMPT, started advanced physical therapy in August of 2000 with four other employees and a vision to work with chronic pain clients. The efforts of these few, dedicated caregivers transformed patient care and the lives of those who thought expert care could not be found in Alaska. By 2011 doors opened to three more clinics. Each successive clinic uses the same treatment paradigms, and follows the same mission that made our initial contact so successful: Service the communities in your life by being the best. We believe that our system of research supported musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment is the ticket to lasting wellness. This philosophy has directed the finest therapists and administrative professionals to pursue their careers with us and in Alaska. Our comprehensive menu of specialized therapeutic services is reflective of the diverse individuals who have decided there is nowhere better to work than at advanced physical therapy. APT is owned by the employees, so the money generated in Alaska, stays in Alaska. Ask any one of the employees and you will hear stories about the organizations they support and the ways they contribute to their community. advanced physical therapy has chosen to partner with their employees and support their efforts through corporate contributions. You will find employees lecturing and offering advice to the community at trade shows, in the classrooms and out on the trails
